1) Can IDEAL 30-6162 wire connectors be used outdoors or in a wet location?
Yes. The 61 and 62 WeatherProof connectors are UL Listed to 486G, Sealed Twist-On Wire Connector, for damp and wet locations and above-grade applications. They come pre-filled with a 100% silicone-based sealant that keeps moisture and corrosion off the splice. Note the above-grade qualifier: they are not a direct-burial connector.
2) Can these IDEAL WeatherProof connectors be used on a ground or bonding splice?
The Model 61 is approved for bonding and grounding applications. On the 30-6162 card you get five 61s alongside five 62s, so the grounding-approved connectors are the smaller of the two included.
3) Do I still need to tape or heat-shrink a splice made with an IDEAL 61 or 62 WeatherProof connector?
No. The pre-filled silicone sealant in these twist-on connectors does the sealing, which eliminates the need for heat-shrink or excessive taping. You strip, twist the connector on, and the sealant displaces around the conductors.
4) What do I actually get on the IDEAL 30-6162 card?
The 30-6162 is a card of 10 WeatherProof connectors, 5 of the Model 61 and 5 of the Model 62. It is a mixed card, so you are getting two sizes rather than ten of one. If a job needs all one size, order the single-model card instead.
5) What temperature are IDEAL 61/62 WeatherProof wire nuts rated for?
The shell is UL 94V-2 flame-retardant and rated at 105 C (221 F). That covers the usual 90 C branch-circuit conductor insulation you will be splicing in a fixture canopy, sign, or outdoor junction box.
6) Are these IDEAL WeatherProof connectors hard to tighten by hand on a long day of splices?
They use IDEAL's swept wing design, which gives you something to grip and torque without a tool. That is the practical difference on a crew doing dozens of exterior splices: no driver, no tape, and a seal made in the same motion as the connection.
