1) Does the Weslock 1401 interior trim work on its own, or do I need the exterior handleset too?
The 1401 is the inside half only. It's an interior trim pack with the Bordeau lever and a deadbolt turn, and it has to be paired with an interconnected Weslock exterior handleset to function. Ordering it alone leaves you with no exterior trim and no cylinder. If you're replacing a broken interior lever on a Weslock handleset that's already hung, this is the right part; if the opening has nothing on it yet, you need the handleset as well.
2) What door prep does the Weslock 1401 Traditionale trim need?
Two 2-1/8 inch cross bores, one for the lever and one for the deadbolt, spaced 2-7/8 inches center to center, with a 1 inch edge bore. Backset is 2-3/8 inches and the latch faceplate is 1 by 2-1/4 inches. The latches are non-adjustable, so the backset on the door has to match what you order. Strike is a round corner strike, which drops into a routed round-corner mortise in the jamb without extra chiseling.
3) My door is bored for a 2-3/4 inch backset. Can I still use this Weslock trim?
Not as ordered. The 1401 comes at a 2-3/8 inch backset and Weslock's latches for it are non-adjustable, so a door already bored at 2-3/4 inches needs the 2-3/4 inch version instead of shimming or swapping the latch face. Measure from the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch cross bore before you order; those are the two standard residential backsets and getting it wrong means the lever will not line up with the strike.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Weslock 1401 Bordeau lever trim?
Yes, and it isn't reversible in the field. It's built left hand or right hand, so you order the one that matches the door. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it's a left hand door, hinges on the right is right hand. Both handings come in Oil Rubbed Bronze and in Antique Brass, so the finish choice doesn't limit which handing you can get.
5) I have a Kwikset or Schlage handleset already. Can I put the Weslock 1401 interior trim on it?
