A ship auger like the Metallics AL58 is the one you want for deep boring. It has a single long flute and no spur-and-screw head stack, so it clears chips over an 18 inch cut without packing up and it tolerates the occasional nail better than a short self-feed or Forstner-style bit. Use a short auger or spade bit only where you are drilling single-thickness material.
3) Is the Metallics AL58 long enough to drill through a double top plate from below?
An 18 inch auger gives you plenty of cutting length for a double top plate, which is only about 3 inches of wood, and the extra length is what lets you reach up into a bay from a ladder or down through a sole plate and subfloor without an extension. Just allow room above the drill body for the full shank travel in tight ceiling work.
