1) Does the 8801FL passage lock lock at all, or is it always free to open?
It never locks. The 8801FL is a passage function: the Pacific Beach lever retracts the latchbolt from both sides at all times, with no cylinder and no keyway. It is non-keyed by design, so use it on halls, closets, corridors and any opening that only needs a latch to hold the door closed. If you need to secure the room, this is the wrong function; a storeroom, office or classroom body from the same size family is what you want instead.
2) Will the 8801FL latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch, which is the normal commercial mortise throw, and the body sits on a 2-3/4 inch backset. If the frame was prepped for an ANSI mortise lock at that backset, the existing strike lines up.
