1) Will the Yale 88 auxiliary latch fit my door thickness?
The Yale Commercial 88 auxiliary security latch covers doors from 1-3/8 inches up to 2-1/4 inches thick. That range takes in the standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door, the older 1-3/8 inch interior door, and thicker solid entry doors that many rim locks will not reach through.
2) What backset does the Yale 88 auxiliary lock bore at?
It bores at a 2-3/8 inch standard backset, which is the shallower of the two common backsets and is what you normally find on residential-width stiles and older openings. If the existing prep on your door is 2-3/4 inches, the 88 will not line up without redrilling.
3) Do I need a separate strike, and what kind of strike does the Yale 88 use?
An angled strike is the type specified for the 88 latch. The latchbolt throws 5/8 inch, so the strike has to be set to pick up that bolt at the jamb. If you are replacing a different auxiliary latch that used a flat or box strike, plan on swapping the strike too rather than trying to reuse it.
4) What cylinder does the Yale 88 take, and can I key it into my existing system?
The 88 uses a rim cylinder, 5 pin as supplied, and ships with two keys. Rim is the same cylinder format used on rim exit devices and rim night latches, so if your building is already keyed on a 5-pin rim cylinder you can generally pin the 88 to match. Confirm the keyway you are running before you order.
5) Is the Yale 88 a fire rated or UL listed lock?
No. The 88 auxiliary security latch is not UL Listed and not ULC Listed. If the opening is a labeled fire door, this is not the part to use on it; specify hardware carrying the listing your inspector is looking for.
6) Can I add the Yale 88 as a second lock above an existing knob or lever set?
That is the job it is built for. It is an auxiliary latch, meaning it supplements the primary lockset rather than replacing it, bored on its own 2-3/8 inch backset above or below the existing lock. Because it is non-handed it drops onto either swing without you specifying hand.
7) Will a 5/8 inch throw latch be enough security on an exterior door?
A 5/8 inch latchbolt is a latch throw, not a deadbolt throw, so the 88 is a supplemental security latch rather than a substitute for a deadbolt on a main entry. Yale's auxiliary range also includes deadlocks and deadbolts if the opening needs a longer bolt into the frame; pick those where the spec calls for deadbolt protection and use the 88 where you want a second keyed latching point.
