Zero International 564A 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Zero 564 threshold work on a standard rabbeted commercial door frame?
That is exactly what the 564 is cut for. It is a rabbeted aluminum threshold, meaning the profile steps up to meet the rabbet in the frame and the door closes down onto the raised leg. Overall it measures 3.687 inches wide by 1/2 inch high, with 0.125 inch wall thickness. Measure the rabbet-to-stop dimension at your sill before ordering: if your frame is a flat, non-rabbeted opening, a saddle or bumper-seal threshold is the right part instead.
2) Is the Zero 564 threshold fire rated for a labeled opening?
UL10c Listed, and BHMA certified to ANSI J36300. That covers it for fire-rated commercial openings where the threshold has to carry a listing. It is also rated for air seal and sound seal, which is where the neoprene insert earns its keep on an exterior or acoustic door.
3) Is the Zero 564 threshold ADA compliant for a barrier-free opening?
No. The 564 is not an ADA accessible threshold. At 1/2 inch high with a rabbeted profile and a neoprene stop, it is built for sealing and fire performance, not for a barrier-free path of travel. If the opening is on an accessible route, specify a threshold listed as ADA accessible instead.
4) What lengths does the Zero 564 rabbeted threshold come in, and can I cut one down?
Four stock lengths: 36, 38, 42 and 72 inches, each available in Aluminum Mill or Black. Order the next length up from your frame opening and cut to size on site. Aluminum extrusion cuts clean with a miter saw and a non-ferrous blade. The 72 inch length is the one to take for a pair of doors or a wide single leaf.
5) What does the neoprene stop on the Zero 564 threshold actually seal against?
The insert is an extruded neoprene bulb and finger that sits proud of the aluminum and compresses against the bottom of the door as it closes. Two sealing surfaces, not one, which is what gets the air and sound ratings. The bottom edge of the door has to land on the insert, so check the undercut on your door leaf: a door hung with a large gap over a 1/2 inch high threshold may not reach the bulb.
6) Can I use the Zero 564 threshold on a retrofit, or is it new construction only?
Both. Zero calls out OEM, new construction, and retrofit on standard rabbeted frames. On a retrofit you are replacing a worn threshold in an existing rabbet, so the thing to verify is the width available at the sill against the 564's 3.687 inch footprint and whether your old unit sat 1/2 inch proud. Match those two and it drops in.
7) What is the difference between the Zero 564 threshold and a Pemko 61 interlocking J hook?
Different jobs. The 564 is a complete rabbeted threshold with a neoprene bulb and finger seal, 3.687 inches wide by 1/2 inch high, UL10c listed. The Pemko 61 Series interlocking J hook is a threshold accessory in steel, 36 inch, that interlocks with a hook seal on the door bottom rather than serving as the threshold on its own. If you need the sill member itself, that is the 564. If you are building an interlocking hook detail, the 61 is the accessory that goes with it.
8) Do I order the 564A or the 564BK, and does the finish change anything but the color?
564A is Aluminum Mill, 564BK is Black. Same extrusion, same 3.687 by 1/2 inch profile, same neoprene insert, same ratings. Mill aluminum is the default on commercial openings and blends with aluminum frames. Black is the pick when the sill is dark or the specifier is matching black hardware. Both run in all four lengths.
9) Is the Zero 564 a residential threshold or is it meant for commercial doors?
Commercial. The 564 is specified for commercial openings, and the reasons show in the build: extruded aluminum at 0.125 inch, a UL10c listing for labeled doors, and a neoprene seal rated for air and sound. Property managers standardizing across a multi-family or institutional building can run the same profile on every rabbeted opening and stock two finishes instead of a dozen.
