1) Will a Spears 1-1/2 inch PVC foot valve glue directly into schedule 40 PVC pipe?
The spigot end on the Spears FVS-015 foot valve is sized like PVC pipe, so it drops into the socket of a 1-1/2 inch PVC fitting or coupling and solvent welds in place. You do not need an adapter if your line terminates in a socket. If your suction line ends in male pipe thread or a bare pipe end, you will need a 1-1/2 inch socket coupling to land it.
2) What does a foot valve do on a pump suction line, and do I need one?
A foot valve sits at the bottom of the suction line, under water. It lets flow move up into the pump and closes when the pump shuts off, so the line stays full and the pump does not lose prime and have to be re-primed on every start. The Spears PVC foot valve also carries a screen at the inlet to keep sediment and debris out of the pump. If your pump is above the water level (a well, a sump, a tank draw, an irrigation intake), you want one. A pump flooded by gravity from above does not need it.
3) I am replacing a failed foot valve on an existing 1-1/2 inch PVC suction line. Will this one work?
