Blackburn ATL1-38 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn ATL1-38 compression lug take?
The ATL1-38 is sized for 1 AWG conductor. It's a compression lug, so it has to be crimped with the correct die for that size, not torqued down like a mechanical set-screw lug. One conductor per barrel.
2) Will the Blackburn ATL1-38 lug bolt to a 3/8 inch ground bus or breaker pad?
Yes. The ATL1-38 has a single mounting hole sized for a 3/8 inch stud or bolt, so it lands on any 3/8 inch bus bar tap, breaker lug pad, or ground bar hole. One hole means it needs only a single fastener, but it also means it can rotate on the stud if it isn't properly torqued.
3) Can I use an aluminum compression lug like the ATL1-38 on copper wire?
The ATL1-38 body is aluminum and it's a dual-rated (AL/CU) type compression lug, so it takes either aluminum or copper 1 AWG conductor. On aluminum conductor, brush the strands and use an oxide inhibitor before crimping. Many of these come pre-filled with inhibitor in the barrel.
4) Should I use a compression lug like the ATL1-38 or a mechanical set-screw lug?
The ATL1-38 is compression, meaning it's crimped permanently onto the conductor with a hydraulic or battery crimper and matching die. That gives a gas-tight, vibration-resistant termination and is what most utility and switchgear specs call for. A mechanical set-screw lug installs with just a hex key and a torque wrench, and can be re-used or re-terminated, which is why it's preferred for field changes and panel work where no crimper is on site. If you don't own a crimper with the right die, a mechanical lug is the practical choice.
5) Why is the Blackburn ATL1-38 lug gold colored?
The gold tone is the color coding on the barrel, which on compression lugs identifies the die and die index to crimp with. Match the crimp tool die to the color/index stamped on the lug rather than guessing from the wire size alone.
6) Does the ATL1-38 come in a pack or is it sold individually?
Sold each. If you're terminating a three-phase feeder plus neutral and ground, count the terminations and order that quantity, plus spares for miscrimps.
7) Where is the Blackburn ATL1-38 lug made?
Country of origin is Mexico. Relevant if you're bidding work with domestic sourcing requirements such as a Buy American clause on a federal or institutional job.
