1) Will the Watts 40L 0163765 T&P valve thread into a 1 inch tapping on my water heater?
Yes, if the tank tapping is 1 inch NPT female. The 0163765 has a 1 inch male NPT inlet that screws into the tank, and a 1 inch female NPT outlet for the discharge tube. Both ends are 1 inch, so the drain line is run in 1 inch pipe as well.
2) Is an 8 inch thermostat probe too long for my water heater?
The 0163765 carries an 8 inch copper extension thermostat, which is meant for tanks where the tapping sits in a thick jacket or where the sensing element has to reach past insulation into the water. On a tank built for a short shank valve, an 8 inch probe can bottom out or interfere with the dip tube, so check the tapping depth before you thread it in. Short-shank versions of the 40L are the answer for standard residential tappings.
3) Does this valve reseat itself after it relieves, or does it have to be replaced?
It is an automatic reseating design, so once temperature and pressure drop back below the set points it closes again on its own. That said, a valve that has dumped repeatedly usually means a real problem upstream, a failed thermostat or no thermal expansion tank on a closed system, and a valve that keeps weeping after reseating should be replaced.
4) Can I use this on a boiler or a hydronic system instead of a water heater?
No. The 0163765 is a temperature and pressure relief valve for water heaters. Hot water boilers take an ASME-rated boiler relief valve sized to the boiler output, which is a different product. Use this one on storage-type water heaters only.
