Metallics JFM95 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 10-24 machine screw thread into standard electrical device and box tapped holes?
Yes. The Metallics JFM95 is a 10-24 UNC thread screw made to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the thread standard used for 10-24 tapped holes in outlet boxes, device mounting ears, cover plates and strap mounting. 24 threads per inch is the coarse series, so it mates with any 10-24 tapped hole or 10-24 nut.
2) Will the flat head on this 10-24 screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
It will, provided the hole is countersunk at the standard 82 degree included angle for a flat head screw. The JFM95 head measures 0.333 to 0.362 in. across and 0.098 to 0.116 in. in head height, and it is made to ASME B18.6.3-1998 dimensions, so it drops into any standard #10 flat head countersink and finishes flush with the surface. In a plain drilled hole with no countersink the head will stand proud.
3) Are Metallics JFM95 screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JFM95 10-24 machine screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, these will not satisfy it.
4) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JFM95?
They ship 100 to a jar, and the jar is the order minimum, so the smallest quantity you can buy is 100 pieces. The filled jar weighs 1.25 lbs.
5) What screwdriver do I need for these Metallics flat head machine screws?
A flat blade (standard) driver, not a Phillips. The drive is slotted, with a slot width of 0.05 to 0.06 in. and a slot depth of 0.034 to 0.053 in., so a #2 size flat tip roughly 0.05 in. thick fills it properly. A blade that is too thin will cam out of a slot that shallow.
6) Is 1-1/2 in. long enough for mounting through a plaster ring or ganged device setup?
The JFM95 is a 1-1/2 in. long 10-24 screw, which is the length electricians reach for when the device has to span an extension ring, a deep plaster ring, or built-out drywall and tile. For a device landing directly on a flush box ear, 1-1/2 in. leaves a lot of thread standing behind the box ear, so a shorter 10-24 is the cleaner choice there.
7) How much load will a 10-24 steel zinc machine screw hold?
Rated at 1050 lb minimum tensile, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. The steel is in the AISI 1006 to 1022 range, which is the low carbon material normally used for commercial machine screws, so these are fine for device mounting, strap and bracket work, not for structural or high tension joints.
8) Can zinc plated steel machine screws be used outdoors or in damp locations?
The JFM95 is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a mild indoor corrosion coating. It holds up fine in dry interior electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, but in wet locations, outdoors, or anywhere washdown or salt is involved the plating gives up and the steel rusts. Go to a stainless machine screw of the same 10-24 x 1-1/2 in. size for those openings.
9) What is the difference between a machine screw like this and a self-tapping sheet metal screw?
A machine screw has a uniform straight 10-24 UNC thread meant to engage a hole that is already tapped, or a nut. It will not cut its own thread. If you are fastening into unthreaded sheet metal, a strut nut, or a drilled hole with no tap, you want a sheet metal or self-drilling screw instead. The JFM95 is the right part when the device, box, or bracket already has 10-24 threads in it.
