Metallics JRM95 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I drive these with a Phillips bit, or do I need a flat blade?
Either. The head is a combo drive, slotted and Phillips in one head, so a #2 Phillips bit or a flat blade both work. That is useful on a service call where you are reaching into a box one handed and only have one driver on the belt.
2) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JRM95 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing language in the spec, you will need a domestically produced fastener instead.
3) How much does the round head stand up off the surface?
Head height runs 0.123 to 0.137 in. with a head width of 0.334 to 0.359 in. A round head sits proud of the surface rather than pulling flush, so if you need the fastener flush in a countersunk hole, choose a flat head machine screw instead of the JRM95.
4) Are these strong enough for structural or load-carrying use?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with hardness of Rockwell B70-B100, made from AISI 1006-1022 steel. That is a general-purpose low-carbon machine screw intended for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, not a graded structural bolt. For load-bearing connections specify a graded hex cap screw instead.
5) Will zinc-plated steel screws hold up outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plating over steel is a mild corrosion barrier suited to dry interior work. For wet locations, exterior boxes, or coastal and wash-down environments, go with a stainless machine screw in the same 10-24 x 1-1/2 size rather than the zinc-plated JRM95.
6) How are the JRM95 screws packaged and what is the smallest quantity I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. The filled jar weighs 1.12 lbs. Handy for a van stock or a shop drawer rather than a loose handful at the counter.
7) Is a machine screw the right choice, or should I be using a sheet metal screw?
A machine screw like the JRM95 has a straight, uniform 24 TPI machine thread meant to turn into a pre-tapped hole or a nut, which is why it suits tapped box ears and threaded brackets. If you are fastening into unthreaded sheet metal with no tapped hole, use a self-tapping sheet metal screw instead.
8) Will a #2 Phillips bit cam out of these heads?
The Phillips recess is specified at 0.182 to 0.195 in. diameter with a 0.093 to 0.119 in. depth and gaging depth of 0.082 to 0.108 in., which is matched to a #2 driver. Using a #1 or #3 bit is what strips a combo head, so stay with the #2. The slot side measures 0.05 to 0.06 in. wide by 0.065 to 0.087 in. deep if you prefer a flat blade.
9) I need 10-24 combo screws in a different length. Does Metallics make other sizes in the JRM series?
Yes, the JRM series covers other sizes and quantities by request beyond the JRM95's 10-24 x 1-1/2 in. If you are standardizing a stockroom on one drive style, the combo head carries across the line.
