Metallics JRM114 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
No. The JRM114 round head combo machine screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project has a domestic sourcing clause, these will not satisfy it.
2) Do I need a Phillips or a flathead driver for these Metallics combo screws?
Either one. The head is a combo, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so whatever driver is already in your pouch works. A #2 Phillips is the specified driver size. For the slot, a blade of about 0.05 to 0.06 inch thickness matches the slot width, seating to a slot depth of 0.065 to 0.087 inch.
3) Will the round head on these screws sit flush, or does it stand proud of the surface?
Round head, so it sits on top of the surface, not in it. The head measures 0.334 to 0.359 inch across and stands 0.123 to 0.137 inch above the material. That domed profile also covers an oversized or slightly misaligned hole. If you need the head buried in a countersunk hole, you want a flat head screw instead.
4) How are these Metallics 10-32 screws packaged, and what is the smallest quantity I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. That is a shop-stock quantity rather than a loose handful, which suits a service van or an MRO crib where 10-32 round heads get pulled daily.
5) Are zinc plated steel machine screws okay for outdoor or damp locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which is a corrosion coating for dry interior and protected use. For exterior exposure, wet locations, or washdown areas, go with stainless rather than zinc plated steel. The plating will eventually give up where water sits on it.
6) How strong are these screws, and what steel are they made from?
Carbon steel to AISI 1006 - 1022, hardened to Rockwell B70-B100, with a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi. That is standard commercial machine screw strength, fine for device, fixture, and strap mounting. It is not a structural or high-tensile grade, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls for a graded bolt.
7) What trades actually use a 10-32 x 2-1/2 round head combo screw?
Metallics builds the JRM series for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. In practice that means mounting devices, plates, straps, hangers, and equipment covers to tapped 10-32 holes where you need extra reach. The combo head means a plumber with a flat blade and an electrician with a #2 Phillips can both drive the same screw off the same truck.
