Metallics JFMP72SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-24 machine screw thread into my existing device box or fixture strap?
The Metallics JFMP72SS is a 10-24 UNC thread cut to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, 24 threads per inch. 10-24 is the standard machine screw thread used on electrical device boxes, fixture straps, and plates, so it threads into any tapped 10-24 hole. At 1 inch long it gives you more reach than the short screws usually packed with a box, which is useful when you are shimming a plaster ring or stacking a mud ring.
2) Will the head sit flush, and what countersink does it need?
Flat head, so it seats flush in a countersunk hole. The head measures 0.333 to 0.362 in. across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 in., which is the standard 82 degree flat head profile under ASME B18.6.3-1998. If your hole is drilled straight through with no countersink, the head will stand proud, use a pan or round head instead.
3) Can I use these on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JFMP72SS is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For a public project carrying domestic sourcing language, you need a domestically produced fastener, not this item.
4) What size Phillips driver do these Metallics 10-24 screws take?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.198 in. in diameter and 0.124 in. deep, so a #2 bit bottoms out properly, a #1 will cam out and chew the recess. Worth noting on stainless, which galls more readily than plated steel if the bit slips.
5) How many screws come in a jar, and can I buy fewer?
These ship as a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. There is no smaller break on the JFMP72SS. Jar weight is 0.73 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in the Metallics FM and FMP machine screw line are available by request.
6) Is a machine screw the right choice, or do I need a self-tapping or sheet metal screw?
A machine screw has a uniform straight thread and no point, it only works in a hole that is already tapped or in a nut. The JFMP72SS is a 10-24 UNC machine screw, so pair it with a tapped 10-24 hole or a 10-24 nut. For driving into unthreaded sheet metal, a self-drilling or sheet metal screw is the correct fastener instead.
7) What trades and applications are these Metallics flat head screws stocked for?
They are catalogued for the electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning trades, general purpose fastening where a flush flat head and corrosion resistance are both needed. Typical uses are mounting plates, covers, straps, and brackets into tapped 10-24 holes, plus food processing and refrigeration equipment where the stainless matters.
