Metallics JFM19 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-24 machine screw thread into a standard device box or switch plate ear?
The Metallics JFM19 is a 10-24 UNC screw, 24 threads per inch, cut to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard. That is the thread found on outlet box mounting ears and most device/plaster-ring holes, so it threads straight into standard box prep. At 3/8 in. long it is a short screw, so it is for attaching a device or plate to tapped metal, not for reaching through thick build-up.
2) Will a flat head 10-24 screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
Yes, that is the point of the flat head. The head measures 0.333 to 0.362 in. across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 in., built to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so it seats flush in an 82 degree countersink of standard #10 prep. If your hole is not countersunk, the head will stand proud and you want a pan or round head instead.
3) Is a zinc plated steel machine screw okay for outdoor or damp locations?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a dry, indoor-rated finish. The JFM19 is steel with a zinc finish over AISI 1006 to 1022 wire, which handles normal interior electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work fine. For wet locations, exterior boxes, or washdown areas, go to a stainless machine screw in the same 10-24 x 3/8 size instead.
4) Do these Metallics machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public job?
No. The JFM19 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded or domestic-preference project, you will need a domestically sourced machine screw instead.
5) How many 10-24 x 3/8 flat head screws come in a jar from Metallics?
These ship 100 to a jar, and the jar is the order minimum, so one unit is 100 screws. Jar weight is 0.376 lbs.
6) What screwdriver do these take, and can I run them with a drill?
Slotted drive only, with a slot 0.050 to 0.060 in. wide and 0.034 to 0.053 in. deep. Use a flat blade that matches that slot width. Slotted heads cam out easily, so hand driving or a low speed driver with firm pressure is the way to go. If you want a Phillips or combo drive, this is not the screw.
7) How much load will a 10-24 steel zinc machine screw hold?
Tensile strength is 1050 lb minimum per screw, with hardness at Rockwell B70 to B100. That is ample for mounting devices, covers, brackets, and straps. It is not a structural or grade rated fastener, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt.
8) Do I need a nut with these, or do they thread into the part?
A machine screw has a straight, fully formed 10-24 UNC thread, so it needs a mated female thread: either a tapped hole in the part or a separate 10-24 nut. It will not cut its own thread in sheet metal or wood the way a self-tapping or sheet metal screw does. Nuts are not included with the jar of 100.
