Metallics JFMP94SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-32 machine screw thread into my existing device box or fixture tapped holes?
The Metallics JFMP94SS is a 10-32 UNF machine screw cut to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, 32 threads per inch. That is the same 10-32 thread used in tapped holes on electrical boxes, covers, and fixture straps, so it threads straight into any hole tapped 10-32. It will not work in a 8-32 or 1/4-20 hole.
2) How deep a buildup can a 3 inch 10-32 flat head screw reach through?
Fastener length is 3 inches, measured from the flat head bearing surface since this is a flat (countersunk) head. That gives usable reach through about 3 inches of combined plaster ring, mud ring, drywall layers, and spacers before it bottoms in the tapped hole. If you only need to pass through a cover and a box ear, a much shorter 10-32 is the better choice.
3) Will the head sit flush, and what size countersink do I need?
Yes, it is made to sit flush. The flat head measures 0.333 to 0.362 inches across with a head height of 0.098 to 0.116 inches, built to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so an 82 degree countersink sized for a #10 flat head takes it level with the surface. In an uncountersunk hole the head will stand proud by roughly the head height.
4) Can I use these Metallics JFMP94SS screws on a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The JFMP94SS is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project has domestic sourcing requirements written into the spec, this screw will not satisfy them.
5) What screwdriver or bit do these Metallics flat head Phillips machine screws take?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.198 inches in diameter and 0.124 inches deep, so a #2 bit seats fully; a #1 will cam out and a #3 won't seat. Worth noting for anyone driving a hundred of these with a drill, stainless is softer than hardened steel and the recess will strip if you lean on an impact driver.
6) Are stainless machine screws the right pick for a damp or corrosive location, or should I use plated steel?
18-8 stainless is the choice where you need general atmospheric corrosion resistance, which covers exterior boxes, wash-down areas, food processing machinery, and refrigeration equipment. It also holds its strength better than plated steel at elevated operating temperatures. Indoors in a dry location, a plated steel 10-32 does the same mechanical job; the reason to pay for stainless is moisture, chemicals, or heat.
7) How are these sold, loose or in a package?
They ship in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. Jar weight is 1.95 lbs. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities in the FM and FMP series are available by request if 3 inch is longer than you need.
