Metallics JSRM261 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Are these screws OK for outdoor, coastal, or wet-location use?
They are made from 316 stainless, the molybdenum-bearing grade that handles salt spray and chlorides better than 304. That makes the JSRM261 a reasonable choice for exterior boxes, rooftop and marine-adjacent work, wastewater plants, and pool or food-processing rooms where plain zinc-plated screws rust out.
2) What driver do I need for the Metallics JSRM261 screws?
Slotted only. The head is a round head with a slotted drive, so you will want a flat-blade screwdriver sized to the slot. If your crew is running Phillips or combo-head drivers, these will slow them down, pick a combination-drive screw instead.
3) Do I get one screw or a jar when I order JSRM261?
JSRM261 is packaged as a jar of 100 screws. It is the standard shop or van quantity for a fastener you reach for constantly, rather than a single-piece item.
4) Is a round head screw the right choice, or should I use a flat head?
Round head sits proud on the surface with a domed crown and a flat bearing face underneath, so it clamps against the face of the material rather than pulling into it. Use the JSRM261 where you have clearance above the part. If the hole is countersunk or the screw head has to sit flush, for example under a flush cover or a trim plate, a round head will not seat and you want a flat head instead.
5) Will 3/4 inch be long enough, or too long, for mounting a device in a box?
Three quarter inch of 10-32 thread covers most device and cover applications where you are going through a strap, a ring, or a bracket of up to roughly half an inch and still want several threads engaged. On a bare box ear with nothing stacked on it, 3/4 inch will bottom out past the tapped hole and leave the tip sticking into the box, so for those use a shorter 10-32. The thread and length are fixed on JSRM261, there is no length option.
6) Do machine screws like these need a tapped hole, or will they bite into sheet metal?
Machine screws are a mating fastener, not a self-tapping one. The JSRM261 needs a pre-tapped 10-32 hole or a nut on the back side. Factory-tapped box ears, device straps, and enclosure bosses already carry that thread. If the hole is unthreaded, pair the screw with a 10-32 nut or tap the hole first.
7) Can I mix 316 stainless screws with aluminum or galvanized enclosures?
You can, and it is common on exterior work, but keep dissimilar metal contact in mind: stainless against aluminum in a wet, salty environment drives galvanic corrosion of the aluminum. For coastal exterior aluminum enclosures, isolate with a stainless washer and a sealant or anti-seize at the joint. In dry interior work it is a non-issue, and the 316 material in these screws is what keeps the fastener itself from rusting.
