Metallics JSRM311 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are these machine screws OK for outdoor or coastal/marine use?
316 stainless is the grade to use outdoors, and that is what the JSRM311 is made from. 316 adds molybdenum over 304, which is why it is the common choice for salt air, coastal sites, pool rooms, and washdown areas. For a dry indoor panel or junction box, plain 304 or zinc-plated steel does the same mechanical job at less cost.
2) Will a round head slotted screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
No. The JSRM311 has a round head, which is a domed head that seats on top of the surface, not in it. If the hole is countersunk and you need a flush face, you want a flat head screw instead. Round head works where there is clearance above the part and you want more bearing surface against a thin panel or a slotted hole.
3) Do the JSRM311 screws include nuts or washers?
No, these are the screws only. A 1/4-20 machine screw needs either a matching 1/4-20 nut or a tapped hole to thread into, and if you want corrosion performance to match the screw, specify the nuts and any flat or lock washers in 316 stainless as well. Mixing a 316 screw with a plated steel nut outdoors gives you a rusting nut.
4) What driver do I need for the Metallics JSRM311?
A flat-blade screwdriver. These are slotted drive, not Phillips, Torx, or hex. Slotted suits electrical work where screws get driven by hand and torque is modest, but it cams out easily under a power driver, so use a hand driver with a blade that fills the slot.
5) Do these screws come loose or packaged?
The JSRM311 1/4-20 screws are supplied in a jar rather than loose in a bag or box, which is the usual way Metallics ships this size for shop and service-truck stock.
6) Will stainless machine screws gall when I tighten them?
Stainless on stainless can gall, and 316 is prone to it, so run the nut on slowly, avoid high-speed driving, and use an anti-seize on the 1/4-20 threads if you are torquing them up hard. These are slotted drive anyway, so hand driving is the normal method and galling is rarely an issue at this size.
