Metallics TSP29M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the TSP29M a self-drilling screw or do I need to pre-drill?
It's a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, not a self-drilling screw. The sharp point starts in thin sheet metal, wood, and fiberboard on its own, but it has no drill flute, so thicker gauge steel needs a pilot hole. For heavier steel you want a Type AB/B with a pilot or a true self-drilling point.
2) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The TSP29M is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your job carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw won't satisfy it.
3) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics TSP29M tapping screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The TSP29M has a Phillips recess sized 0.186 to 0.199 in. diameter and 0.124 in. deep, which is the #2 range. A #1 will cam out and a #3 won't seat.
4) Will a #10 x 1-1/4 pan head screw sit flush, or does the head stand proud?
A pan head sits on top of the surface. The TSP29M head measures 0.357 to 0.373 in. across and 0.122 to 0.133 in. high, so expect roughly an eighth of an inch standing above the work. If you need the head buried, use a flat head screw in a countersunk hole instead.
5) How tough are these screws? I keep snapping heads off with an impact driver.
The TSP29M is hardened to Rockwell C28-38 with a 48 lb-in minimum torsional strength, made from AISI 1016-1024 steel. That's standard case-hardened tapping screw territory, enough for sheet metal work, but an impact driver will exceed 48 lb-in easily. Run them with a clutched drill-driver and back off the torque.
6) Can I use these zinc plated tapping screws outdoors?
Zinc plated carbon steel is a dry, indoor-protected finish. It holds up fine in panels, enclosures, and interior framing, but in exterior or damp locations it will rust. For outdoor or wet work go stainless or a hot-dip galvanized fastener.
7) Do I have to buy a full box of 1000 TSP29M screws?
Yes. The TSP29M ships as a box with a 1,000 piece minimum, so it's a bulk MRO or panel-shop buy rather than a handful. Other sizes and quantities in the line are available by request.
8) What thread pitch is the #10 Metallics tapping screw?
12 threads per inch, per ASME B18.6.4 tapping screw threading. That's the coarse Type A spacing that lets the screw form its own thread in sheet stock rather than matching a machine screw nut.
9) What dimensional standard do these pan head screws conform to?
Head and recess geometry follow ASME B18.6.3-2013, and the threads follow ASME B18.6.4. That means the 0.357 to 0.373 in. head and #2 Phillips recess are to spec and interchange with any other conforming #10 pan head tapping screw. Note that #9 diameter screws in the line are dimensioned independently of ASME B18.6.4.
