Metallics JDSP182 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for the Metallics JDSP182 tapping screw, and can I run it with a hex driver instead?
Both work. The JDSP182 has a combination head: a 5/16 hex (head width 0.305 to 0.312 in.) with a Phillips recess that takes a #2 driver. On a drill you can socket the 5/16 hex for speed and torque, or drop to the #2 Phillips in tight spots where a socket won't clear. Recess diameter is 0.178 in. with a gaging depth of 0.102 to 0.127 in.
2) Will a #10 Type A sharp point screw bite into sheet metal studs without pre-drilling?
That is what the gimlet point on this #10 x 1 in. Type A tapping screw is for. It is a sharp-point, coarse-thread screw at 12 threads per inch, meant to be driven into thin sheet metal, sheet metal studs, and wood or composition board without a pilot hole. For thicker steel or structural plate you want a drill point (self-drilling) screw instead, not a Type A.
3) We have a Buy American clause on a federal job. Do these Metallics screws qualify?
The JDSP182 is flagged both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant in the manufacturer data, with country of origin China. On federally funded work the compliance flag and the origin both get reviewed, so hand your compliance officer both values before you commit the material.
4) Does the JDSP182 screw have a built-in washer under the head?
Yes, it is a hex washer head. The integral washer runs 0.384 to 0.414 in. outside diameter with a thickness of 0.019 to 0.031 in., and the head height is 0.105 to 0.12 in. That washer face spreads the clamp load, so you don't need a separate washer when fastening through sheet metal or a bracket slot.
5) Can I use zinc plated tapping screws outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
Zinc plated steel is a mild corrosion finish, fine for dry interior work, electrical boxes, panels, strut, and conditioned mechanical spaces. For sustained exterior exposure, washdown areas, or anywhere near coastal salt air, specify stainless or a heavier coating instead. The JDSP182 is steel with a zinc finish.
6) How are Metallics JDSP182 screws packaged and what is the smallest quantity I can order?
They ship in a jar of 100. Minimum order is 100 count, so you are buying by the jar rather than loose pieces. Jar weight is 0.75 lbs.
7) Do these screws meet a published dimensional standard for a spec submittal?
Yes. The JDSP182 is built to ASME B18.6.3-2013 for dimensions and ASME B18.6.4 for the thread, with material per AISI 1016-1024. One caveat worth knowing if you order across the Metallics JDSP range: dimensions for the #9 diameter are independent of ASME B18.6.4. The #10 x 1 in. is covered.
