Thinner sheet (light gauge duct, for example) will still take the screw but you lose thread engagement in the base metal; thicker plate is outside the rating and you should pre-drill or move to a heavier point. 2) Will 410 stainless self-drilling screws hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
410 is a martensitic stainless, hardened to Rockwell C38-46 so it can drill its own hole, and it resists corrosion far better than plain carbon steel with a plated finish.
