Metallics JSTS19 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JSTS19 tapping screw corrode if I drive it into aluminum or steel?
It can. The JSTS19 is 18-8 stainless, and fastening stainless parts to aluminum or steel sets up a galvanic couple in some environments, which corrodes the softer base metal over time. On outdoor or damp runs (strut, enclosures, flashing), isolate the joint or stay with a plated screw in the same base metal. In dry indoor electrical work the stainless is the reason to buy it.
2) Do I need to drill a pilot hole for a #10 Type A tapping screw, or does it cut its own?
Type A tapping screws have a gimlet point, so they start in thin sheet metal without a separate lead hole in most cases, but they do not drill their own hole in heavier stock the way a self-drilling point does. Drill a clearance-sized pilot in anything thicker than light gauge. The JSTS19 runs 12 threads per inch, and its rated torsional strength is 48 lb-in minimum, so back off the driver rather than bury it once the head seats.
3) Can I use these screws on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JSTS19 stainless tapping screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. On a job with domestic sourcing language in the spec, these will not clear submittal. For everything else, they are catalogued for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work.
4) How much material will a 10 x 1/2 in. pan head tapping screw actually hold?
Half an inch of screw length total, measured under the pan head, so usable thread engagement is that 1/2 inch minus whatever you are fastening through. That makes it a sheet-to-sheet or device-to-box fastener, not a structural one. If you need to pass through a bracket plus a backing, step up to a longer length in the JSTS series rather than trying to make this one reach.
5) Is the JSTS19 a slotted screw or Phillips, and what driver do I need?
Slotted drive only. The slot measures 0.05 to 0.06 in. wide and 0.053 to 0.068 in. deep, which suits a small flat cabinet-tip driver bit, not a keystone tip that rides up out of the slot. If your crew runs everything on a #2 Phillips bit, order the Phillips version of this pan head self-tapping stainless screw instead; a slotted head and an impact driver is a stripped head.
6) Does the Metallics JSTS19 screw meet a dimensional standard I can put on a submittal?
Two apply. Head and drive geometry follow ASME B18.6.3-2013, and the thread form follows ASME B18.6.4, the tapping screw standard. That covers the pan head profile, slot, and Type A thread. Note that Metallics states #9 diameter dimensions in this family are independent of ASME B18.6.4; the #10 diameter here is not affected.
7) How are these Metallics stainless tapping screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the minimum order quantity. The jar weighs 0.48 lbs. For an MRO crib or a service van, that is one SKU per shelf slot rather than loose bulk. Other sizes and quantities in the JSTS line can be had by request.
