Going over the rating trips the built-in circuit protection, which disconnects power on overload. If your pool light is a 300W or 500W incandescent, this is the wrong size unit.
3) Which output tap should I wire to for a long run out to a pool light?
Start on 12V and measure at the fixture under load. If the reading sits low because of voltage drop on a long or small-gauge run, move to the 13V or 14V tap until the lamp sees about 12V. Over-driving a short run on the 14V tap shortens lamp life, so pick the tap from the measurement, not by default.
