ASC Engineered Solutions 311024004 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and thread does the ASC Engineered Solutions 1-1/4 galvanized malleable iron 45 degree elbow take?
Both ends are 1-1/4 inch FPT, so it threads onto 1-1/4 inch male pipe threads on each side. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1 (NPT), which is what standard black or galvanized steel pipe and nipples are threaded to, so it mates with ordinary 1-1/4 inch threaded pipe without an adapter.
2) Can a galvanized malleable iron 45 elbow be used outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The galvanized coating is applied to ASTM A-153, the hot-dip spec for hardware, which is the coating normally specified for damp, outdoor, or corrosive service. The casting itself is malleable iron to ASTM A-197. For potable water, galvanized threaded fittings are only appropriate where the rest of the piping is galvanized steel as well.
3) When should I use a 45 degree elbow instead of a 90 on a threaded pipe run?
Use the 45 when you need to offset around an obstruction or change direction gradually. Two 45s with a nipple between them make a swing offset that keeps flow smoother and adds less friction loss than a pair of 90s. Stick with a 90 where the run has to turn square at a wall or riser. This one is a 1-1/4 inch 45 degree elbow, female threaded on both ends.
4) Is this a standard weight or extra heavy fitting?
Standard weight (Class 150 style STD), rated per ASME B16.3. If your spec calls for extra heavy or Class 300 malleable iron, this is not the fitting for that line.
5) How much does the 1-1/4 inch galvanized 45 elbow weigh for takeoff and hanger sizing?
0.87 lbs each. Useful when you are totaling fitting weight on a supported run or pricing out freight on a bulk order for a repipe.
