Viega 11465 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is Viega 11465 oxygen barrier PEX for hydronic heating, or plain plumbing PEX?
It is barrier PEX, meaning it carries an oxygen diffusion barrier. That is what closed-loop hydronic systems call for, radiant floors, baseboard and snowmelt loops, where oxygen migrating through the wall would corrode cast iron pumps and boiler components. Plain non-barrier PEX is the potable water product; if the job is domestic hot and cold, you do not need the barrier version.
2) Is Viega barrier PEX made in the USA for buy-American job specs?
Yes. The 11465 barrier PEX is made in the USA, which is what institutional, federal and municipal specs with domestic sourcing language are looking for.
3) Do I order Viega 11465 by the foot or by the coil?
By the coil. The 11465 is a fixed 150 foot put-up of 1 inch tubing, sized as diameter by length in feet, so quantity one gets you one full 150 foot roll rather than a cut length. Size your takeoff in whole coils and allow for the extra you always burn on bends and manifold drops.
4) Is 1 inch PEX the right size for a radiant manifold trunk, or should I run a smaller size?
1 inch is trunk and supply-return size. On a radiant job the 11465 typically feeds the manifold, with smaller barrier PEX taking the individual floor loops off it. Running 1 inch for the loops themselves is unusual, it is hard to bend into tight spacing and wastes volume. Use it where the flow rate demands the larger bore.
