Metallics TEL1224BLK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 12-24 rack screw thread into my threaded server rack or telecom cabinet rails?
Yes, provided the rails are tapped 12-24, which is the common thread for telecom and EIA-style equipment racks. The Metallics TEL1224BLK is a 12-24 machine thread screw, 5/8 inch long, so it engages tapped rails and cage nuts cut for 12-24. If your rack uses square punched holes with 10-32 cage nuts instead, this is the wrong thread.
2) What driver do I need for the Metallics TEL1224BLK tri-drive rack screw?
Three will work. The head is a tri-drive: Phillips, slotted, and square (Robertson) recesses in the same screw. In practice a #2 Phillips or a #2 square bit handles it, which means a tech already carrying either one can install it without adding a driver to the bag.
3) Is the pan head on these telecom cabinet screws going to sit flush or stand proud of the rail?
It stands proud. A pan head has a flat underside and a rounded top, so it seats on the face of the rail rather than countersinking into it, which is what you want for clamping equipment flanges and cable management brackets to a rack. If your part needs a flush finish, you need a flat head instead, not this one.
4) Can I use these screws for mounting patch panels and cable managers, not just equipment?
Yes. Anything that bolts to a 12-24 tapped rack rail takes the same screw: patch panels, horizontal cable managers, blanking panels, shelves, and equipment ears. The 5/8 inch length gives enough thread past the flange and rail for typical sheet metal mounting ears while staying short enough not to foul equipment behind the rail.
5) Why are these rack screws black oxide instead of zinc plated?
Black oxide gives a dark, non-reflective finish that disappears against black rack rails and cabinet frames, which is why it is the standard look in telecom and data closets. The Metallics TEL1224BLK carries that black oxide finish. It is a thin conversion coating, so it suits dry indoor equipment rooms rather than damp or outdoor enclosures.
6) How do I order the Metallics 12-24 rack screws, by the piece or by the box?
The Metallics 12-24 x 5/8 in. pan head tri-drive telecom screw is ordered under part number TEL1224BLK. There is a single model, so you specify quantity rather than choosing between sizes or finishes on the order.
7) Are these rack screws made in the USA?
Yes. The Metallics TEL1224BLK 12-24 x 5/8 in. telecom cabinet screw is made in the USA, which matters on government, education, and other publicly funded jobs that carry domestic sourcing requirements.
