Watts 650246 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What tubing does the Watts 650246 quick connect stop valve accept on each end?
Both ends are 1/2 inch CTS quick connect, so the inlet and outlet each take 1/2 inch (15 mm) copper tube size pipe pushed in without solder, glue or crimp rings. CTS covers 1/2 inch nominal PEX, copper and CPVC of that size. Because inlet and outlet are the same size and the same connection type, there is no reducing or adapting built into this valve.
2) Can I use this Watts plastic stop valve on a hot water supply to a lavatory faucet?
Yes. The 3539B series stop is rated to 180 F (82 C), which covers domestic hot water service at a sink or lavatory. Working pressure is rated to 250 psi. Keep in mind the body, inlet and outlet are all polysulfone plastic, not brass, so it belongs on supply lines, not on anything carrying steam or recirculating above that 180 F ceiling.
3) Can I use this quick connect supply stop on a gas line?
No. The Watts 3539B stop is a water supply stop and is not suitable for gas service. For fuel gas you need a listed gas valve, typically brass or steel with threaded connections. Using a polysulfone water stop on gas is unsafe and not code compliant.
4) Do I need a crimp tool or solder to install the Watts 650246 stop?
No tools for the joint itself. Both ends are quick connect push fittings, so the tube is cut square, deburred and pushed in to seat against the EPDM O-ring. That is the main reason crews pick this style for occupied apartments and tenant finish work: no torch, no crimp ring, no open flame near finished walls.
5) Is the Watts 650246 stop valve all plastic, or does it have a brass insert?
All plastic. The valve is polysulfone throughout, with no brass insert and EPDM O-rings for sealing. That matters in two ways: there is no metal in the water path to corrode or leach, but there is also no metal thread or stiffener, so you should not treat the ports as if they will tolerate wrenching or over-torque like a brass stop would.
6) Is this a straight stop or an angle stop, and what does it actually do?
The Watts 650246 is a supply stop valve: the shutoff you put on the branch line feeding a fixture so the fixture can be isolated without killing the whole building riser. Both connections are 1/2 inch CTS quick connect of the same size and type, so it is used inline on a 1/2 inch supply run rather than as a reducing transition to a riser.
7) Can I install this Watts plastic stop valve in an unheated crawlspace or exterior wall?
Watch the temperature range. The 3539B carries a minimum temperature of 75 F (24 C), so a cold crawlspace, attic or exterior wall cavity is outside what is published for it. Keep it in conditioned space. If the location can drop below that, specify a stop rated for the colder service instead.
8) What is the Watts part number and series for this 1/2 inch quick connect stop, and where is it made?
Order it as Watts 650246 (catalog number 0650246), part of the Watts 3539B series of quick connect supply stops. Country of origin is the United States. If you are standardizing a building on one stop, the 3539B series designation plus the 1/2 x 1/2 CTS size is what you want on the spec sheet.
