Watts 556030 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does a vacuum relief valve like the Watts 0556030 actually do on a water heater?
The Watts LFN36 (model 556030) is a vacuum relief valve for water heater installations. It opens to admit air when a vacuum forms in the tank or supply piping, so the heater does not siphon back or collapse under negative pressure when the cold supply drains down. It is not a T&P valve and it does not relieve excess pressure out of the tank; the listed protection is against vacuum conditions on a water heater system.
2) Can I use the Watts 556030 instead of a temperature and pressure relief valve?
No. This is a vacuum relief valve, rated to a 15 psi maximum working pressure, and it carries no test lever. A water heater still requires its own T&P relief valve sized and rated for the tank. The 556030 is an addition to that, commonly required where the heater can be subjected to a vacuum from a drained cold supply.
3) Is the Watts 556030 vacuum relief valve lead free for potable water?
The body is lead free brass, which is what a potable hot water line calls for on residential and commercial water heater work. Country of origin is China.
4) Does the Watts 0556030 have a test lever?
No test lever on this one. The valve is supplied with a protective cap over the air inlet instead, so there is no manual lift-and-flush check. If your inspector or facility PM program requires a lever for periodic testing, you need a different valve.
5) Where should a 1/2 inch vacuum relief valve be installed on a water heater?
It goes in the cold water inlet piping to the heater, above the top of the tank, mounted upright so the air inlet faces up. The 1/2 inch male NPT end threads into a tee or a tapping at that point. The protective cap keeps debris out of the air port; leave it in place and keep the port clear so air can be drawn in when the line drains.
