Thomas & Betts 6302 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade size conduit does the Thomas & Betts 6302 liquidtight connector fit?
The 6302 is a 1/2 inch trade size connector, so it terminates 1/2 inch liquidtight flexible conduit or cable and threads into a 1/2 inch enclosure opening. Trade size 1/2 is the most common run size in control panels and small-motor branch circuits, so it matches standard knockouts.
2) Is the Thomas & Betts 6302 connector metal or plastic?
Nonmetallic. The 6302 is molded thermoplastic rather than zinc or steel, which means no corrosion in wash-down, outdoor, or chemically aggressive locations. The trade-off is that a nonmetallic body does not carry a bonding path, so equipment grounding has to be handled by a conductor rather than through the fitting.
3) What is the difference between the Thomas & Betts 6302 liquidtight connector and the Bridgeport Fittings 597-DC2 Mighty-Seal connector?
They terminate different things at different trade sizes. The Thomas & Betts 6302 is a 1/2 inch nonmetallic Type A straight liquidtight strain relief connector with a thermoplastic body, so it clamps and seals around flexible cable or conduit and relieves strain at the entry. The Bridgeport Fittings 597-DC2 is a 3/4 inch Mighty-Seal connector in zinc, built for PVC-jacketed MC/TECK cable. If the run is PVC-jacketed MC or TECK cable at 3/4 inch, the 597-DC2 is the fitting for it; for a 1/2 inch nonmetallic liquidtight termination, the 6302 is the match.
4) Does the 6302 give strain relief, or just a liquidtight seal?
Both. The 6302 seals against moisture and contaminants at the enclosure wall and grips the cable so pulling or vibration at the outside of the box is not transferred to the terminations inside. That is the reason it gets specified on motor leads, instrumentation drops, and anything on a moving or vibrating machine rather than a plain sealing bushing.
5) Can I use the Thomas & Betts 6302 on an outdoor enclosure?
Yes, it is built for it. The thermoplastic body will not corrode and the liquidtight design is intended for outdoor electrical enclosures, motor control centers, and industrial control panels where moisture and contaminants are the problem. Keep in mind the fitting only protects the opening it is installed in; the enclosure rating still governs the assembly.
