The DS1715M is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, so it starts in thin sheet metal and will draw itself in without a tapped hole. It is not a self-drilling screw, though, so in heavier gauge or in a strut channel you still drill a pilot. Threads are 11 per inch to ASME B18.6.4, cut into steel hardened to Rockwell C28-38, with a minimum torsional strength of 83 lb-in.
