Metallics JTS32 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Are these screws hard enough to tap into steel electrical enclosures without snapping?
Yes. These are case hardened to Rockwell C28-38 and carry a minimum torsional strength of 83 lb-in, which is what lets the point cut its own thread in sheet steel without shearing the head off. Base material is AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel. Drive them with a clutch or low-torque setting rather than an impact driver to stay inside that figure.
2) Will these Metallics tapping screws satisfy a Buy American or ARRA requirement on a public job?
No. The JTS32 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project has domestic sourcing language in the specification, these will not clear it.
3) What driver bit do these #12 combo head tapping screws take?
They take a #3 Phillips bit, or a flat blade if you prefer. The head is a combo (slotted/Phillips) recess, with a Phillips recess diameter of 0.252 in., slot width 0.056 to 0.067 in. and slot depth 0.055 to 0.077 in. The recess penetration gaging depth runs 0.098 to 0.124 in., so a worn #2 bit will cam out before it seats.
4) Can I use these zinc plated tapping screws outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JTS32 is carbon steel with a zinc plating, which handles indoor and incidental moisture, mechanical rooms and conditioned spaces. Zinc plating is not a marine or sustained wet-location finish, so for exterior rooftop HVAC curbs or washdown areas, specify stainless instead.
5) Do the Metallics JTS32 tapping screws meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Yes. Head and recess dimensions conform to ASME B18.6.3-2013 and the threads to ASME B18.6.4, the tapping screw thread standard. That pairing is what lets a #12 screw from one lot interchange with another in an existing tapped hole.
6) Is a Type A tapping screw the right choice, or should I use a self-drilling tek screw?
Type A, like this JTS32, has a gimlet point sized for thin sheet metal and soft materials and needs either a punched hole or very light gauge to bite. A self-drilling screw carries a drill point and goes through heavier gauge steel in one pass without any hole. For panel covers, trim, box and duct work in light sheet, Type A is faster and cheaper; for structural or thicker gauge, go self-drilling.
7) How are these #12 x 1/2 in. tapping screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a 100 piece jar, and the jar is the minimum order unit. Net weight of the pack is 0.65 lbs. The part number to order is JTS32.
8) Can these screws be used for plumbing and HVAC work, or are they electrical only?
They are rated by Metallics for the electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning trades. Typical uses are enclosure and panel assembly, duct and equipment mounting, and fixture attachment, which is why a single 100 count jar tends to cover several trades on an MRO cart.
