Metallics JTSS37 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSS37 square drive tapping screws?
A #3 square drive bit. The recess is specified as driver size 3R, measuring 0.133 inch across the flats with a gaging depth of 0.080 to 0.095 inch. It's a square center opening with slightly tapered side walls and a conical bottom, so a worn or undersized bit will cam out. Carry a #3 square bit on the drill, not a #2.
2) Is the JTSS37 a self-tapping screw for sheet metal, and does it need a pilot hole?
It's a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point. Type A is the coarse-thread sheet metal screw at 11 threads per inch, and the gimlet (pointed) end starts in thin sheet without a drilled pilot in light gauge material. It is not a self-drilling screw, so thicker steel still wants a pilot hole sized for the #12 diameter.
3) Are these screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JTSS37 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, these will not qualify on the submittal.
4) How many screws come in a pack of Metallics JTSS37?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum, so you buy them by the jar rather than loose by the piece. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
5) Can I use these zinc plated tapping screws outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
Material is steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and sheltered conditions, which is where these are intended, for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. For direct weather exposure, wet locations, or treated lumber contact, go to stainless or a hot dip galvanized fastener instead.
6) How much torque will these screws take before they snap?
Minimum torsional strength is 83 lb-in, with case hardness at Rockwell C28-38. That's enough to drive through sheet steel without twisting off, but it's a limit worth respecting on an impact driver, set the clutch rather than running it wide open.
7) Do the Metallics JTSS37 screws meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Yes. Head and recess dimensions are built to ASME B18.6.3-2013, threads to ASME B18.6.4, and the steel is AISI 1016 to 1024. Note the description's caveat that dimensions for #9 diameter screws fall outside ASME B18.6.4; the #12 covered here is within the thread standard.
8) Is a 2 inch screw length too long for fastening a box or strap to sheet metal?
Fastener length is 2 inches, which is long for thin sheet work, the excess thread just protrudes out the back. Use the 2 inch length when you need to reach through wood blocking, insulation, or stacked material; for attaching directly to a stud or a panel face, a shorter #12 is the cleaner pick. Other lengths are available by request.
