Metallics JTSS6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSS6 square drive tapping screw?
A #1 square (Robertson) bit. The JTSS6 uses a square recess with a driver size of 1R, and the recess measures 0.091 inch across the flats with a gaging depth of 0.050 to 0.065 inch. Bring a #1 square bit to the job; a #2 will cam out of the recess.
2) Do I have to pre-drill for a Type A tapping screw like the JTSS6, or does it cut its own thread?
The JTSS6 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, so it forms its own thread as it drives into a pilot hole in sheet metal or into wood framing. The sharp gimlet point starts without a punched hole in thin material, but in heavier gauge metal you still want a pilot. Thread pitch is 18 threads per inch to ASME B18.6.4.
3) Does the Metallics JTSS6 meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JTSS6 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
4) Will a #6 x 2 inch pan head screw sit flush enough under a box cover or strap?
Not flush, a pan head sits on the surface. The JTSS6 head measures 0.256 to 0.270 inch across and 0.087 to 0.097 inch high, so it leaves roughly a tenth of an inch of head proud of the material with a broad bearing face that will not pull through sheet metal or a strap slot. If you need the head buried, a flat or oval head countersunk screw is the one to specify instead.
5) How many Metallics JTSS6 screws come in a jar and can I buy just a few?
The JTSS6 ships in a jar with an order minimum of 100, so the jar is the buying unit rather than a loose count. Jar weight is listed at 0.66 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Is the zinc finish on these tapping screws suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The JTSS6 is zinc plated carbon steel, made from AISI 1016 to 1024 steel. Zinc plating is a dry to occasionally damp interior finish, fine inside panels, boxes, and conditioned mechanical rooms. For sustained exterior exposure, wet locations, or anywhere near chlorides, move to a stainless or hot dip galvanized fastener.
7) Will a #6 tapping screw snap when I run it in with an impact driver?
Minimum torsional strength on the JTSS6 is 24 lb-in, with case hardness of Rockwell C28-38. That is enough to tap sheet metal under a drill or driver, but 24 lb-in is not much on a #6 shank, so back the clutch off on an impact and do not finish the last turn at full trigger.
8) What standard are these pan head tapping screws built to for submittal purposes?
Head and recess dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2013 and the thread form follows ASME B18.6.4. Material is AISI 1016 to 1024 steel. One caveat worth noting on a submittal: dimensions for the #9 diameter are independent of ASME B18.6.4.
