1) Does the Metallics JTS82 tapping screw need a pilot hole, or will it start on its own?
The JTS82 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, so it starts and taps its own thread in sheet metal without a separate tapping operation. In thin gauge metal it will self-start; in heavier stock a pilot hole sized for the #12 shank keeps it from walking and avoids stripping. The thread is a coarse 11 threads per inch, which is what Type A spaced thread is designed for in sheet metal and similar soft stock.
2) Will a #12 pan head screw sit flat without pulling through sheet metal or a strap?
The pan head measures 0.407 to 0.425 in. across and 0.139 to 0.151 in. high, so it gives a wide, low bearing surface that seats on top of the material rather than countersinking. That head width is what keeps it from pulling through sheet metal, straps, and clips. If you need the head flush with the surface, a pan head is the wrong choice and you want a flat head instead.
3) Can I use Metallics JTS82 screws on a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?

A #2 Phillips will cam out on this size, so bring the #3 if you are driving a jar of them.
5) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JTS82, and can I buy fewer?
