Metallics JTS63 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What kind of screw is the Metallics JTS63, and what is it meant to fasten into?
The JTS63 is a #14 x 2 inch Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point and 10 threads per inch. Type A with a gimlet point is the sheet metal screw you use to bite into thin sheet steel, sheet metal duct, and similar light-gauge material without a pilot tap. Metallics lists it for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades.
2) Are the Metallics JTS63 screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JTS63 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing clause, these will not clear it.
3) What driver do I need for the JTS63 pan head screw?
It is a combo head, so it takes either a #3 Phillips or a flat/slotted blade. The Phillips recess runs 0.274 inch diameter with recess penetration gaging depth of 0.118 to 0.144 inch, and the slot is 0.064 to 0.075 inch wide and 0.06 to 0.085 inch deep. For a power driver, use a #3 Phillips bit; a #2 will cam out of a recess this size.
4) Will these zinc tapping screws hold up on a job without rusting?
The JTS63 is steel with a zinc finish, made from AISI 1016 to 1024 steel and case hardened to Rockwell C28 to 38. Zinc plating is a dry-interior-and-protected finish, fine for duct, enclosures, strut, and indoor mechanical work. For sustained outdoor exposure or washdown, step up to a stainless or hot dip galvanized fastener instead.
5) How are these Metallics tapping screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar, 100 screws minimum, and the jar weighs 2.34 lbs. Order quantity is in jars, so quantity 1 gets you 100 pieces rather than a single screw.
6) Do these screws meet a published fastener dimensional standard for a spec submittal?
Yes. The head conforms to ASME B18.6.3-2013 and the thread to ASME B18.6.4, which is the Type A tapping screw thread standard. Note Metallics states that dimensions for #9 diameter screws in the JTS line fall outside ASME B18.6.4; the #14 size covered here is to standard.
7) Is a #14 x 2 in. sharp point tapping screw the right choice for fastening into heavy steel or concrete?
No. A Type A gimlet point screw is designed to form its own thread in thin sheet material. For structural steel use a self drilling point screw, and for masonry or concrete use a concrete screw anchor. The 2 inch length on the JTS63 is there to reach through insulation, lagging, or stacked sheet material and still get thread engagement, not to anchor into solid substrate.
