1) Will a #12 x 3 in. Type A tapping screw bite into wood studs, or does it need a pilot hole in sheet metal?
The JTS83 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point and a coarse 11 threads per inch, which is the configuration meant to self-start in wood, particleboard, and thin sheet metal without a pilot. In heavier gauge metal you still drill a clearance pilot, because Type A thread form is designed for thin stock, not structural steel.
