1) Are these Metallics stainless self-drilling screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JTEKD20SS is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this part will not satisfy it.
2) Is the JTEKD20SS screw stainless all the way through or just coated?
The material is 410 stainless steel, a hardenable martensitic stainless. That is what lets the point be heat treated to Rockwell C38-46 and still drill its own hole, which 300 series stainless cannot do. Note 410 is corrosion resistant but not to the level of 304 or 316, so for coastal or chemical exposure it is the wrong choice.
3) Does this screw come with a sealing washer or just a bonded flat washer?
An integral washer head with an outside diameter of 0.398 to 0.432 inches and washer thickness of 0.022 to 0.039 inches. It spreads bearing load over sheet metal and strap, which is what keeps the head from pulling through thin panel. It is a metal washer, not an EPDM sealing washer, so it is not intended as a weathertight roofing fastener.
4) What are these self-drilling hex head screws actually used for on the job?
They are the general purpose Type BSD self-drill and tap screw for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work: hanging strut and strap, fastening boxes and enclosures to metal studs, duct and sheet metal connections. Because they drill and tap in one pass, there is no pilot hole step. Drill time runs about 2.5 seconds through a 1 mm plate.
5) How much torque can a #12 410 stainless self-drill screw take before it snaps?
Minimum torsional strength is 92 lb-in. Stainless and steel self-drillers carry the same minimum torque figures, so you do not need to back off your driver clutch compared to a plated carbon screw. Set the clutch rather than running an impact wide open, since the drill point work hardens the hole and overdriving at the seating point is where these break.
6) How are the JTEKD20SS screws packaged and what is the minimum order?
