Blackburn GR5006 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the GR5006 galvanized or copper-bonded, and does that matter for my soil?
Galvanized steel, not copper-bonded. The zinc coating is the corrosion barrier. Galvanized rods are common and accepted for general grounding electrode use, but in aggressive or high-chloride soil, or where the rod will be bonded near copper conductors underground, many electricians spec a copper-bonded rod instead to avoid galvanic issues. For ordinary residential and light commercial service grounding, the galvanized GR5006 is the standard choice.
2) Does the Blackburn GR5006 come with a ground rod clamp?
No. The GR5006 is sold as the rod alone, one rod per unit. You'll need to add an acorn-style ground rod clamp sized for a 1/2 inch rod and your grounding electrode conductor, and order clamps in the same quantity as rods.
3) Will a 1/2 inch ground rod pass inspection, or do I need 5/8 inch?
That depends on your local amendment. The GR5006 is a 1/2 inch diameter rod; many jurisdictions require 5/8 inch for a service grounding electrode and permit 1/2 inch only for lightning protection, equipment grounds, fence and antenna grounding, or where a listed smaller rod is specifically allowed. Check what your AHJ accepts before you drive it, and if the job calls for 5/8 inch, order that diameter instead.
4) Can I use the GR5006 for a satellite dish, antenna, or fence grounding?
Yes, that's a common use for a 1/2 inch by 6 foot galvanized pointed rod. Drive it full depth, bond it back to the building's grounding electrode system so you don't create a separate isolated ground, and land the conductor with a rod clamp rated for 1/2 inch.
5) Where is the Blackburn GR5006 ground rod made?
The GR5006 is made in the United States. For public works and federally funded projects with domestic sourcing requirements, that's the detail the submittal usually asks for.
6) What is the manufacturer part number for the Blackburn 1/2 x 6 galvanized ground rod?
GR5006 is the Blackburn part number for the 1/2 inch by 6 foot galvanized pointed ground rod. Use that number on the PO or the submittal.
