Klein Tools 50350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Klein 50350 fish tape leader fit my existing steel fish tape?
The Klein Tools 50350 leader is made for 1/8-inch wide flat steel fish tapes. If your tape is 1/8 inch wide steel, it attaches and works. Wider flat tapes or non-steel (fiberglass, nylon) tapes are not what this leader is built for.
2) How many wires can I pull with the 50350 leader eyelet?
The eyelet takes up to five #12 unstripped wires or seven #10 bare wires, and the leader is strength rated to 250 pulling pounds. For bigger bundles than that, break the pull into passes rather than overloading the eyelet.
3) Will a flexible leader get a flat steel tape around a 90-degree conduit bend?
That is the point of it. The 50350 has a 3/16-inch diameter spiral-wrapped cable body that guides a flat steel tape through 90-degree bends, and it makes pushing and pulling the flat tape easier because the rounded leader does not catch the way a flat tape edge does.
4) Is this a complete fish tape or just the leader?
Just the leader. The 50350 is a 13.5-inch flexible leader that attaches to the end of a 1/8-inch wide flat steel fish tape you already have. If you need the tape itself, order a steel fish tape separately; this part only replaces or upgrades the tip.
5) What size conduit will the 50350 leader pass through?
The leader body measures 3/16 inch in diameter over an overall length of 13.5 inches, so the limiting factor is the bundle you tie to the eyelet, not the leader itself. In 1/2-inch and larger conduit the leader clears easily; in tight raceways with existing fill, the 13.5-inch rigid-ish length is what you plan around at each bend.
6) What is the Klein part number I should order for the 13-inch flexible leader?
Order Klein Tools 50350. That is the manufacturer part number for the 13-inch flexible fish tape leader, sold as a single piece.
7) Can I use this leader to fish a circuit that is still energized?
No. Do not use any fish tape, including this leader, on or near live circuits. De-energize first, wear approved eye protection when feeding, pulling or rewinding, and work from a stable position so you do not lose balance mid-pull.
8) Is the Klein 50350 leader going to rust in a damp crawlspace or underground run?
The leader is steel, built around a rustproof inner steel cable core wrapped with a spiral cover. That construction is what keeps it serviceable after wet pulls, though as with any steel tape you should wipe it down before rewinding.
9) How much does the Klein 50350 leader weigh and how big is it for a tool pouch?
Light enough to forget about: 1.6 oz (45 g), 13.5 inches long, 0.8 inch wide and 0.7 inch tall. It rides flat in a pouch or stays coiled with the tape reel.
