Metallics JSRM31P – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size screwdriver or bit do I need for the Metallics JSRM31P machine screws?
A #3 Phillips bit. The JSRM31P takes a Phillips drive with a #3 driver size, which is larger than the #2 most people reach for by default. Recess geometry runs 0.255 to 0.268 inch diameter with a 0.121 to 0.147 inch depth, so a #2 bit will ride high in the recess and cam out. Bring a #3 to the job.
2) Will 1/4-20 x 3/4 in. round head machine screws thread into a standard 1/4-20 tapped box or strut nut?
Yes. The JSRM31P is cut 1/4-20, meaning a 1/4 inch nominal diameter at 20 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch for that diameter. It mates with any 1/4-20 tapped hole, nut, or channel nut. Thread length is 3/4 inch, so account for that against the depth of the tapped material.
3) Do Metallics JSRM31P screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a public project?
No on both counts. The JSRM31P is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing language, these will not satisfy it.
4) Are 18-8 stainless machine screws OK for outdoor or damp electrical work?
18-8 stainless is the austenitic grade used where corrosion is the concern, which is why these are specified for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work rather than plated steel. They resist rust in damp and exterior locations. For chloride-heavy coastal or pool environments, 316 is the better material.
5) How much load will a 1/4-20 18-8 stainless machine screw take?
Tensile strength is 80,000 psi minimum, with hardness in the Rockwell B85 to B95 range. Worth knowing: there is no single performance standard for stainless machine screws, so Metallics publishes that figure as an approximation rather than a graded rating. If your drawing calls out a specific bolt grade, a graded steel fastener is the correct call.
6) How does the JSRM31P ship, and is there a minimum order?
These come 100 to a jar, and the jar is the order minimum. You are buying the full 100-count container, not loose pieces, which is the normal format for MRO and service-truck stock.
7) Can I use these round head screws where the fastener has to sit flush with the surface?
No. A round head stands proud of the material by 0.16 to 0.175 inch and is not made to be countersunk. If the surface has to finish flat, specify a flat head machine screw in the same 1/4-20 x 3/4 size and prep the hole with an 82 degree countersink.
8) What is the difference between a machine screw like this and a sheet metal or self-tapping screw?
A 1/4-20 machine screw has a uniform straight thread and no point, so it needs a pre-tapped hole or a nut, it will not cut its own thread. That is what makes it right for bolting to tapped boxes, channel nuts, and enclosure bosses. If you are driving into bare sheet metal with no tapped hole, you want a self-tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
