Metallics JRM100SLT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JRM100SLT 1/4-20 machine screws?
The JRM100SLT ships 100 screws in a jar, and 100 count is the order minimum. If you need a different quantity or size, Metallics states other sizes and quantities are available by request.
2) Will a 1/4-20 machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or fixture tapped hole?
The JRM100SLT is cut 1/4-20, which is 20 threads per inch on a 1/4 inch nominal diameter, so it mates with any 1/4-20 tapped hole or 1/4-20 nut. It will not engage the 8-32, 10-24 or 10-32 threads used on most device boxes and cover plates, so confirm the tapped hole is 1/4-20 before ordering.
3) Is a 3/4 inch long machine screw long enough for my application?
Grip length is what matters with a machine screw. The 3/4 inch length on the JRM100SLT is measured under the round head, so you get 3/4 inch of usable thread for the material thickness plus whatever the nut or tapped hole needs. Stack up your material and allow a couple of threads past the nut; if that totals more than 3/4 inch, step up to a longer 1/4-20.
4) How strong are these steel zinc machine screws?
Tensile strength on the JRM100SLT is 60,000 psi minimum, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard low carbon machine screw strength, fine for mounting fixtures, straps, brackets and enclosures, but not a substitute for a graded cap screw in a structural or high load joint.
5) Can I use zinc plated machine screws outdoors or in a damp location?
The JRM100SLT is zinc plated carbon steel, which handles indoor and dry locations well but offers only light corrosion resistance. For wet, coastal or washdown environments, specify stainless. Note that Metallics gives tensile values for stainless screws as approximations only, since there is no single performance standard for stainless machine screws.
6) Why a round head slotted screw instead of Phillips or hex?
A round head gives a domed, slightly raised profile that bears on the surface rather than sinking flush, so it's the choice where you have no countersink. The slotted drive takes a plain flat blade, which is what most electricians already have on a screwdriver or multi-tool. If you're driving a lot of these with a power driver, a Phillips or combo head holds the bit better. Metallics was the first US fastener company to offer a full line of combo drives.
7) Are these Metallics machine screws Buy American and ARRA compliant for a federal or public project?
The JRM100SLT is flagged compliant for both Buy American and ARRA in the product data, with country of origin listed as China. On federally funded work, verify which flag your specification actually requires, since domestic sourcing requirements and ARRA compliance are not the same test.
8) Do nuts and washers come with these machine screws?
No. The JRM100SLT is sold as 100 screws in a jar, screws only. A machine screw needs either a tapped hole or a matching 1/4-20 nut, so order 1/4-20 hex nuts and any flat or lock washers separately.
9) How much does a jar of 100 of these 1/4-20 screws weigh and how big is the container?
A jar of the JRM100SLT weighs 1.25 lbs, and the container measures 3 in by 3 in by 2.15 in tall. Small enough to drop several into a van bin or a service cart drawer.
