1) How strong is a 1/4-20 socket head cap screw compared with a Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex bolt?
The alloy steel socket head cap screw runs 180,000 psi minimum tensile and 162,000 psi minimum yield, hardened to Rockwell C39. That is greater tensile strength than equivalent sizes of Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head cap screws, and because it is wrenched internally it needs less surface area or counterbore clearance than a hex head of the same diameter.
2) Does this socket head screw need a counterbore, and how deep?
Head height is 0.244 to 0.25 in. and head width is 0.365 to 0.375 in., so a counterbore of about 1/4 in. deep and slightly over 3/8 in. diameter will bring the head flush. Left on the surface, the head stands 1/4 in. proud with a 3/8 in. footprint, which is why these fit in tight spots where a hex head and a wrench will not.
3) Can I use these on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
