1/4-20 x 1 in. Socket Head Hex Cap Screws - Alloy Steel Black - 100qty
Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request | Cap screws of a length 3D or greater, where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw, are subject to tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of area testing.
Features
- Elongation is 10% minimum (applies to machined specimens of lenglh at least 4D where D equals the nominal diameter of the screw) and Reduction of Area is 33% minimum (applies to machined specimens)
- Supplies greater tensile strength than equivalent sizes of Grade-5 or Grade-8 hex head cap screws while requiring less surface area or counterbore since the fastener is intenally wrenched.
- Socket head with Hex Drive
- Alloy Steel Black Material
- 1/4-20 Diameter, 1" Length

Metallics JSHC141 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 1/4-20 x 1 in. socket head cap screw hold better than a Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head bolt of the same size?
Yes on strength. The Metallics JSHC141 alloy steel socket head cap screw runs 180,000 psi minimum tensile and 162,000 psi minimum yield, which is above what equivalent sizes of Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head cap screws deliver. Because it's internally wrenched with a hex socket, it also needs less surface area or counterbore clearance than a hex head of the same diameter. Hardness is Rockwell C39.
2) What size counterbore do I need for a 1/4-20 socket head cap screw?
Size the counterbore off the head: the JSHC141 head measures 0.365 to 0.375 in. across and 0.244 to 0.25 in. tall, so the bore has to clear 3/8 in. diameter and be at least 1/4 in. deep to bring the head flush. The screw is built to ASME B18.3-2012, so those head dimensions are the standard inch socket head cap screw envelope and any B18.3 counterbore chart applies.
3) Is this a coarse or fine thread screw, and will it take a standard 1/4-20 nut?
Coarse. It's 20 threads per inch in the UN inch series, which is standard 1/4-20 UNC, so it mates with any standard 1/4-20 nut, coupling, or tapped hole. Usable length under the head is 1 in.
4) Is this fastener Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JSHC141 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If the spec on your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this one won't satisfy it.
5) How does this Metallics cap screw ship, and is there a minimum order?
It ships in a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 is the order minimum. The jar weighs 1.66 lbs. If a job needs a different length or diameter, other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Is a black alloy steel cap screw okay for outdoor or wet locations?
Treat it as an indoor or protected fastener. The JSHC141 is plain alloy steel with a black finish, which gives no meaningful corrosion protection, so for exposed exterior mounting, wet wells, or corrosive environments use a plated or stainless socket head cap screw instead. Inside panels, strut runs, equipment frames, and mechanical rooms it's fine.
7) What trades actually use these socket head cap screws?
Metallics lists the SHC series for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries. In practice that's panel and enclosure mounting, equipment and motor bracketry, strut and hanger assemblies, and anywhere a high strength fastener has to sit in a counterbore or a tight pocket where a wrench can't swing on a hex head.
