1) Is a 1/4-20 socket head cap screw stronger than a Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head bolt of the same size?
Yes. The alloy steel socket head cap screw is rated at 180,000 psi minimum tensile and 162,000 psi minimum yield, which is higher than equivalent sizes of Grade 5 or Grade 8 hex head cap screws. Because it is wrenched internally, it also needs less surface area or counterbore clearance around the head than an externally wrenched bolt, which is why it gets used in tight brackets and machined pockets.
2) Will a 1/4-20 socket head cap screw thread into a standard 1/4-20 tapped hole or nut?
