ASC Engineered Solutions 310023007 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the 1/4 inch black malleable iron 45 degree elbow have female threads on both ends?
Both ends are 1/4 inch FPT, so this elbow takes male pipe threads on each side. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1 (NPT), which is what standard 1/4 inch black steel nipples and threaded pipe are cut to. Nothing on it is sweat, press, or grooved.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron 45 elbow on a domestic water line?
No. Black malleable iron fittings like this one are for gas, fuel oil, air, and low pressure steam, and for non-fluid uses like pipe railing or fixture framing. The black finish is a mill coating, not a corrosion barrier, so it rusts in potable water service. For water you want galvanized or a copper/PEX system instead.
3) Is the ASC 1/4 inch black 45 elbow UL listed and FM approved?
Yes, it carries UL/FM recognition. That matters if you are pulling fittings for a job where the inspector wants listed components on the line rather than plain commodity fittings.
4) Is this 1/4 inch 45 degree elbow standard weight or extra heavy?
Standard weight (STD), Class 150 malleable iron built to ASME B16.3 for both dimensions and pressure rating. If your spec calls for Class 300 extra heavy, this is not the right fitting.
5) What iron grade is this elbow made from, and will it hold up to vibration?
It is malleable iron to ASTM A-197, the standard cupola malleable grade for threaded fittings. Malleable iron has real ductility compared to gray cast iron, which is why it is used on gas and air lines where there is vibration or occasional impact rather than a brittle cast fitting.
6) Do I need thread sealant with this fitting, or is it included?
The elbow ships as a bare fitting only. NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1 seal on the taper with a sealant, so you supply pipe dope or PTFE tape yourself, and on a gas line it has to be a sealant rated for the fuel you are running.
