ASC Engineered Solutions 311079800 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread type does the ASC 1/4 inch galvanized malleable iron coupling use, and will it screw onto standard 1/4 inch black or galvanized pipe?
Both ends are 1/4 inch FPT, female tapered pipe thread cut to ASME B1.20.1 (NPT). So it threads onto any 1/4 inch NPT male pipe nipple or threaded pipe end, black or galvanized. Use pipe dope or PTFE tape on the male threads; NPT seals on the thread taper, not on a gasket.
2) Does this coupling meet the spec on my drawing if it calls for ASME B16.3 Class 150 malleable iron fittings?
It is built to ASME B16.3 for both dimensions and pressure class, with the body cast to ASTM A-197 malleable iron and threads to ASME B1.20.1. The strength class is STD, which is the standard 150 class line of that spec. That set of callouts is what most mechanical specs for threaded malleable iron fittings ask for.
3) Can I use a galvanized malleable iron coupling on a wet or outdoor line, or do I need brass or stainless?
The coupling is hot dip galvanized to ASTM A-153, which is the heavier hot dip coating spec rather than a light electroplate, so it holds up on damp, outdoor, and wet fire protection service better than plain black iron. For potable water or corrosive chemical service, malleable iron is not the right material choice, go to brass or stainless instead.
4) Is this a straight coupling or a reducing coupling?
Straight. Size 1 and Size 2 are both 1/4 inch, female thread on each end, so it joins two 1/4 inch threaded pipe ends of the same size. If you need to step from 1/4 inch to a larger line, you want a reducing coupling or a bushing instead.
5) What is the ASC part number and how much does one 1/4 inch galvanized coupling weigh?
The manufacturer part number is 311079800 and each coupling weighs 0.09 lbs. That weight is useful if you are figuring hanger loads or freight on a bulk count of small fittings.
