Minerallac 59016J – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole do I drill for a 1/4 inch hammer drive anchor, and how deep does it have to go?
The Minerallac 59016J hammer drive anchor is a 1/4 inch diameter anchor with a 1/4 inch drill size, so the hole matches the anchor body. Minimum embedment is 0.75 inches. Since the anchor is only 1.000 inch long overall, you have very little room to play with: drill deeper than the finished embedment so the pin has somewhere to go, and keep the material you are fastening thin enough that at least 3/4 inch of the anchor still sits in the masonry. Fastening a 1/4 inch thick termination bar leaves exactly 3/4 inch in the wall, which is the floor, not a margin.
2) Can I use hammer drive anchors in hollow block, drywall, or mortar joints?
No. These zinc alloy drive anchors are rated for solid concrete, solid brick, block and masonry only. A drive pin expands the anchor body against solid material; in a hollow cell or in soft mortar there is nothing for it to bear against and the anchor spins or pulls straight out. Drywall and hollow wall need a toggle or a screw-in wall anchor instead. If you are drilling into a block wall, hit the solid web or a fully grouted cell, not the void.
3) Can I hang conduit or a fixture overhead with a 1/4 x 1 inch drive anchor?
No, and this is the one that gets people in trouble. The 59016J is specifically not recommended for vibrating loads or overhead installations. Overhead conduit, strut, light fixtures and anything on a motor or compressor line all fall outside what this anchor is meant to hold. Drive anchors of this type are a light duty, face-mount fastener. For overhead support use a rated wedge anchor, screw anchor or drop-in with a proper anchor body sized to the load.
4) Are Minerallac 59016J anchors the right fastener for mounting a termination bar on a concrete wall?
That is exactly the job these are built for. The 1/4 x 1 inch drive anchor is called out for attaching termination bars and similar light components to solid concrete, brick and block, and it takes load immediately after the pin is driven, so you can run your bar and move on without waiting on an adhesive to cure. Drill 1/4 inch, hold the bar, drop the anchor through, and set the pin with a hammer.
5) Can a hammer drive anchor be removed later, or is it permanent?
Treat it as permanent. The mushroom head has no drive recess, so there is nothing to back it out with, and that is what makes the finished assembly tamper resistant. Removal means grinding or drilling the head off and either punching the body deeper or leaving it. If you expect to service or relocate the equipment, use a removable anchor with a threaded fastener instead.
6) Will zinc plated drive anchors hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The zinc alloy body with a zinc plated finish gives corrosion resistance for general interior and sheltered exterior use. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so in a wet, chemically aggressive or coastal setting it will eventually give up. For a pool room, a wash-down area or direct salt exposure, specify a stainless anchor.
7) Do I need a special tool to install Minerallac drive anchors?
A hammer and a 1/4 inch carbide masonry bit in a hammer drill is the whole tool list. Drill the hole through the part you are fastening into the masonry, seat the anchor, then drive the pin flush with the mushroom head. No setting tool, no torque wrench, no cure time. Blow or vacuum the dust out of the hole first, since packed dust keeps the anchor from reaching the 0.75 inch minimum embedment.
