Metallics JDS85 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I drive the JDS85 screw with a nut driver, or do I need a screwdriver?
Either works. The head is an indented hex with a slot cut across it, so a 3/8 inch nut driver or hex socket seats on the head, and a flat blade fits the slot when you cannot get a driver square on the fastener. The hex measures 0.367 to 0.375 inch across the flats and 0.409 across corners, and the slot is 0.064 to 0.075 inch wide by 0.083 to 0.101 inch deep.
2) Can I use the Metallics JDS85 on a federally funded job with domestic content requirements?
No. The JDS85 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with a multiple-country origin. If your contract carries Buy America or ARRA domestic sourcing language, you need a certified domestic fastener instead.
3) Does the Metallics JDS85 hex head screw have a built-in washer face?
Yes, the head carries an integral washer section measuring 0.480 to 0.520 inch outside diameter and 0.030 to 0.050 inch thick. That spreads the bearing load over the sheet metal so the head does not pull through thin stock, and it covers a slightly oversized or elongated hole in a box or plate. Overall head height is 0.172 to 0.19 inch.
4) Will a #14 x 1/2 inch sharp point screw snap when I run it in with an impact driver?
These are heat treated to Rockwell C28-38 from AISI 1016-1024 steel with a rated torsional strength of 125 lb-in minimum. That is ample for driving into light gauge metal, but a high torque impact driver can exceed it. Set the clutch or use a nut runner and let the screw seat rather than cranking on it once the washer face bottoms.
5) Are these Metallics screws okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JDS85 is steel with a zinc finish, which is a general purpose indoor and protected-location coating. It handles normal interior humidity and construction exposure, but for sustained wet, coastal, or corrosive service you want stainless or a hot dip galvanized fastener instead.
6) How many Metallics JDS85 screws come in a jar, and is there a minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. The packed jar weighs 1.03 lbs.
7) Do these tapping screws meet a recognized dimensional standard for spec submittals?
Head dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread follows ASME B18.6.4, the tapping screw thread standard. Note that Metallics calls out #9 diameter dimensions in the JDS line as independent of ASME B18.6.4; the JDS85 is a #14 diameter, so it is within the standard thread sizes.
8) Is a 1/2 inch long screw enough to hold in a device box or sheet metal bracket?
For single-thickness light gauge sheet, yes, 1/2 inch of #14 at 10 threads per inch gives you several full threads of engagement past the material. Stacking two or three layers of heavier gauge, or going into a thicker channel, eats that engagement quickly and you should step up in length. Metallics offers other lengths and diameters in the JDS line on request.
