Metallics TEKD44SSB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is 410 stainless okay for outdoor or coastal work?
410 stainless is the martensitic grade used for self-drilling screws because it can be hardened enough to cut its own hole, Rockwell C38-46 here. It resists corrosion far better than plain carbon steel and suits general exterior and damp interior use, but it is not as corrosion resistant as 300 series stainless. In salt spray or shoreline exposure, a 300 series or coated bi-metal fastener is the safer call.
2) Does the washer on these screws seal, or do I need a separate bonded washer?
The washer is an integral part of the head, a formed hex washer with an outside diameter of 0.480 to 0.520 in. and 0.030 to 0.050 in. thick. It spreads clamp load over the panel, but it is a plain metal washer, not an EPDM bonded seal. For weathertight roofing or siding penetrations you need a screw with a bonded neoprene or EPDM washer, or a separate sealing washer.
3) What standards do Metallics TEKD44SSB screws meet for a submittal?
Head and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010, and the thread conforms to SAE J78-2013, the self-drilling tapping screw standard. Metallics lists the screw as both ARRA and Buy American compliant, with country of origin recorded as multiple. One caveat worth knowing on submittals: SAE J78 does not cover specifications for #7 diameter drill screws.
4) What size driver do I need for these #14 indented hex head self-drilling screws?
Hex drive, 3/8 inch indented hex washer head. Head width runs 0.367 to 0.375 in. with 0.409 across the corners, so a 3/8 hex driver or socket seats properly. Head height is 0.172 to 0.19 in.
5) How much material can I fasten with a 3-1/2 inch long self-drilling screw?
At 3-1/2 inches of length with a #14 diameter, this screw has the reach for thick stack-ups, strut and hanger attachments, standoff mounting, or fastening through insulation or sheathing into steel behind it. Thread runs along the shank from the drill point, so the usable grip is the length less whatever the point consumes drilling through the base metal.
6) Will stainless self-drilling screws snap off before carbon steel ones when I drive them?
No. Metallics states minimum torques are the same for stainless and steel self-drill screws, and the 410 stainless here is heat treated to Rockwell C38-46, the hardness range needed to cut steel. Drive them at a controlled speed with steady pressure; backing off pressure mid-drill is what work-hardens the hole and burns a point.
