ASC Engineered Solutions 310084801 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the ASC 1/4 x 1/8 black malleable iron reducer have female threads on both ends?
Both ends are female pipe thread (FPT), so the reducer takes male threaded pipe or a male fitting nipple on each side. It steps 1/4 inch NPT down to 1/8 inch NPT. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1, the standard NPT taper spec, so it mates with any standard NPT male thread of those sizes.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron reducer on a gas line, or do I need galvanized?
Black malleable iron is the usual choice for gas and for closed-loop steam or hot water, where galvanized is normally reserved for water service. This one is black finish malleable iron built to ASTM A-197 with ASME B16.3 dimensions and pressure ratings, which is the standard threaded fitting spec those systems are piped to. Always follow your local code for the specific service.
3) Is this reducer UL listed and FM approved for fire sprinkler work?
Yes, the 1/4 x 1/8 black malleable iron reducer carries UL/FM recognition, so it can go into a listed fire protection assembly where a small threaded reduction is needed, such as a gauge or drain connection. It is a Class 150 standard pattern fitting, not extra heavy.
4) What is the difference between a reducing bushing and this 1/4 x 1/8 reducer coupling?
A bushing is male on the large end and female on the small end, so it threads into a female port. This ASC part is female on both ends (FPT x FPT), which makes it a reducing coupling, it joins two male pipe ends of different sizes. If you are trying to reduce inside an existing female tapping, you want a bushing instead.
5) Will a STD malleable iron fitting hold the same pressure as the pipe it is on?
This reducer is standard weight (STD), rated to ASME B16.3, which is the Class 150 malleable iron threaded fitting standard. That is the normal pairing with standard weight black steel pipe. If your spec calls for extra heavy Class 300 fittings, this one does not meet it.
6) Do I need pipe dope or PTFE tape with this fitting?
Yes. The threads are NPT taper per ASME B1.20.1, and taper threads seal on thread engagement with a sealant, they are not a gasketed joint. Use a thread sealant rated for your service, gas rated dope for fuel gas lines. No sealant is supplied with the fitting.
7) How much does one 1/4 x 1/8 malleable iron reducer weigh?
About 0.07 lbs each. It is a small fitting, so a box of them adds almost nothing to a truck load, useful if you are stocking a service van or an MRO crib with a full range of small reductions.
