1) How do I tell an FKM ProPress seal from the standard EPDM one before I press the joint?
Colour is the tell. The Viega 17818 is an FKM element and is dull black, which is how Viega marks the FKM version apart from the standard green EPDM element. If you pull a ring out of a fitting and it is dull black, it is the FKM seal, and it should go back into an FKM application, not a potable water line where EPDM was specified.
2) I have a leaking 1-1/2 inch ProPress joint. Can I just replace the seal?
A ProPress element is a replaceable part, and the 17818 is the 1-1/2 inch FKM one. The press connection itself cannot be un-pressed, so replacing the element applies to a fitting that has not been pressed yet, or to a fitting being prepped before it goes on the pipe. If the joint is already crimped, cut it out and use a new fitting.
